Meet William Taylor, Mary MacKillop First Nations Vocational Scholarship

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

William Taylor is a proud Aboriginal man from the community of Muludja in Fitzroy Crossing. Growing up, William moved around with his family to places like Derby, Halls Creek, and even Busselton, where he briefly attended school before returning to Fitzroy Crossing.

However, the big turning point in William’s life came when he moved to Broome. While his family returned to Fitzroy Crossing, William chose to stay and build a life for himself. Today, he lives independently in a residential place for young men, where he’s made a great circle of friends and established a supportive community.

William first enrolled at North Regional TAFE completing the Keys for Life program which helped him gain a learner’s permit. His journey took an exciting twist when his employer at A Sporting Chance saw his potential and suggested he take things further by enrolling in the Certificate IV in Community Services (CHC42021). William took the leap, and as he puts it, the course has been “kind of amazing. I’m learning about life and childcare.”

This opportunity was made possible through the Mary MacKillop First Nations Vocational Scholarship. Since 2021 this scholarship has helped create opportunities across economic, social, political, and physical wellbeing for students affected by financial hardship, vulnerability, and barriers to education.

William is incredibly grateful for the support he’s received from the Aboriginal Training Services (ATS) team at NR TAFE. William dreams of securing a full-time job, which he loves, and one day owning his own home.

William encourages everyone not to shy away from applying for a scholarship saying, “Give it a try. Just go for it! You never know what can happen in life.”
