Study Mode On campus
Gain confidence in navigating vessels up to 24 metres, instructing crews, and maintaining detailed records.
Learn to plan passages for vessels up to 80 metres safely. Our Qualification meets AMSA licensing requirements, alongside medical tests, an oral exam, and sea-time hours. It's also a stepping stone for further study and career growth.
The Certificate III in Maritime Operations (Master up to 24 metres Near Coastal) entitles certificate holders to:
- Command a commercial vessel less than 24m in length in the exclusive economic zone (EEZ)
- Act as a Chief Mate or deck watchkeeper on vessels less than 35m long.
Throughout the course, you will gain skills in:
- Navigating the seas
- Rising to challenges and leading your crew on fishing charters
- Commercial vessels and tourist trips, with skills in shipboard safety, coastal navigation and passage planning
- Ship knowledge and vessel operations including stability and deck loading
- Operating marine radio and radar.
- You are wishing to become employed in the maritime industry or attain the Masters ticket to enhance promotion in the sector
- You are an industry provider wishing to upskill staff in maritime operations
Students will complete a face-to-face study of 20 days (at 6.5 hours per day).
To attain this qualification, participants will need to complete the following skill sets:
Master 24 Navigation Watchkeeping
The Master 24 Navigation Watchkeeping block is made up of 3 units:
- MARH015 Manage and maintain a navigational watch on board vessels up to 80 metres
- MARH016 Plan and navigate a passage for a vessel up to 80 metres
- MARH017 Use wheelhouse equipment for safe navigation

Master 24 Ship Knowledge
The Master 24 Ship Knowledge block is made up of 3 units:
- BSBLDR301 Support effective workplace relationships
- MARB029 Perform routine maintenance on a vessel up to 24 metres
- MARB030 Slip or dock a vessel and maintain hull on a vessel up to 80 metres

Master 24 Seamanship Skills
Master 24 Seamanship Skills block is made up of 4 units:
- MARI004 Observe regulations to ensure the safe operation of a vessel up to 80 metres
- MARJ007 Monitor environmental management on a vessel
- MARK008 Manoeuvre a vessel up to 24 metres Near Coastal waters
- MARN009 Perform seamanship operations on board a vessel up to 24 metres

Shipboard Safety
The Shipboard Safety block is made up of 4 units:
- MARF027 Apply basic survival skills in the event of vessel abandonment
- MARF028 Follow procedures to minimise and fight fires on board a vessel
- MARF029 Meet work health and safety requirements
- MARF030 Survive at sea using survival craft
