The North West cattle industry provides a vast area of employment for young stockmen and women from all over WA. Do you wish to work in the cattle industry? This entry-level course could lead you on an exciting path from stockman to head stockman and eventually, station manager.
This qualification is directly aligned with priority industry areas where jobs are today, and into the future. As part of the state government Lower fees, local skills initiative, from 1 January 2020 through to 31 December 2025 you'll only pay half the tuition fees (plus resource fee) capped at $1,200; or $400 if you're aged 15—24 or eligible for a concession. Throughout this course, you will undertake a combination of written assignments and hands-on industry tasks including fencing, tractor operations, cattle processing and mustering in teams.
You will gain skills in machine operations, maintenance and horse husbandry, and participate in environmentally sustainable work practices.
After completing this course, you will be job ready for entry level positions in agriculture, farming, market gardens, and mixed rural enterprises.
This course is currently only delivered to cattle stations and prisons.
Depending on the elective units you select, you will gain skills in:
- Environmentally sustainable work practices
- Work health and safety processes
- Handling and caring for horses and livestock
- Planting, propagation and plant care
- Treating weeds
- Irrigation operations and monitoring water supplies
- Operating tractors, basic machinery and machinery maintenance
- Installing fencing and maintenance
- You enjoy a practical, hands-on job
- You seek work in the agricultural or beef production industries
- You seek work in rural and regional Australia
